Specialized High School Admissions Test Preparation for Students Taking the Exam in Fall 2019
As you may know, the SHSAT has changed significantly over the last couple of years. We are excited to be able to work with your kids during this transitional period as the city tries to make the test more equitable and fair for all. The test is still designed to be challenging and can be very intimidating to students. With a lot of practice, skill-building, and understanding strategies to find the simplicity hidden in the complicated way the questions are worded, we can help students master this test and maximize their scores.
Each student has different needs with regard to test prep. The most important aspect is getting an early start on preparation for this exam if you truly think that the specialized high schools are the best fit for your child.
At Smith Street Workshop, we offer:
Courses (see below for registration)
Our courses run in the winter, spring, summer, and fall with a maximum of 15 students. They cover all aspects of the test in an intimate setting where students naturally challenge each other to take it to the next level. We look at every necessary skill set and strategy and then practice, practice, practice.
If the timing of the courses does not work for your child's schedule, contact us to create your own customized class with 5+ friends.
2-4 students with similar needs come together for private sessions with a skilled instructor
One-on-one sessions to hone specific skills unique to the student
SHSAT Prep Course Curriculum
At Smith Street Workshop, our curriculum development team has a deep understanding of the SHSAT and its intricacies. They are constantly staying abreast of changes to the test design, and modifying and adapting our course curriculum to reflect the most up-to-date revisions of the exam.
Our SHSAT test prep courses provide students with repeated opportunities to practice every question type on the test and learn strategies for breaking down the problems, identifying answer traps, and managing their time. Our instructors help students build confidence and find the simplicity hidden in the complicated way the questions are worded on the SHSAT. With a lot of practice and skill-building, we help students learn how to approach this complicated exam and maximize their scores.
Description: The summer SHSAT course is designed to accommodate all levels, and teachers work hard to differentiate and individualize instruction. This course is appropriate for students who are just beginning to prepare as well as for those who took our courses in the spring. In this session, we go beyond the introduction to the material and really zero in on the most important content, and hone the students' individual strategies for mastering each type of question. Repetition, lots of practice and confidence building are essential to feeling positive in the upcoming year as the test approaches.
Typically, a student only registers for 1 week of intensive study, followed by either individual tutoring sessions or the Fall course. Sometimes families opt for multiple weeks of intensive coursework, but there is obviously some repetition involved in the instruction as each of the Intensive courses uses the same curriculum and textbook/practice sets.
SHSAT course registration comes with 2 full-length free practice tests. Students should plan to take one test at the beginning of a course and one towards the end in order to track progress and make plans for moving forward. When you register for a course, you will receive two practice tests in your Sawyer (our booking provider) account. The proctored practice tests will take place at our new 104 1st Place location and last for 3 hours. The dates and links to register for the practice tests can be found here.
15 student maximum. Pricing includes textbook, access to online resources and 2 free practice tests with detailed score reports.
