Specialized High School Admissions Test

While it remains to be seen if (and to what extent) the admissions process to the city's specialized high schools will change next year, we can assume that the SHSAT will still play a large role in a student's acceptance to his or her top choices. The test is designed to be challenging and can be very intimidating to students. With a lot of practice, skill-building, and understanding strategies to find the simplicity hidden in the complicated way the questions are worded, we can help students master this test and maximize their scores.

In order to give the students plenty of time to gain mastery over the material, we began courses for current 7th grade students in January of 2016.

This winter, we offered two separate weekly classes that are differentiated based on prior exposure to some of the more complicated math concepts.  Much of the material is quite advanced, and some students need more support at the beginning of their preparation with the foundations of the mathematical concepts. Some students are ready for the accelerated course, depending upon their background.

To figure out which winter course is appropriate for your child, have them complete the diagnostic assessment at the following link:  SHSAT Math Diagnostic Once you have submitted the assessment, we will get back to you within 24-hours to let you know which winter course we recommend for your child.

Our recommendation in terms of the best course of action for students who are truly interested in admission to one of the specialized high schools is to enroll in one of the winter courses, followed by the more intensive spring course, and then opt either for the summer intensive + fall Saturday sessions or just the fall courses. In addition to the classes, we offer individual and/or group tutoring sessions if desired.

Spring Courses

SHSAT prep

Time: Monday 5:30 – 7:30pm (May 2nd - June 20th - no class May 30th)
            or Tuesday 5:30 – 7:30pm (May 3rd - June 21st - no class June 14th)
Level: Current 7th graders
Instructor: Olivia Ramsey & Jackson Jones

Description: These two hour classes are built upon the foundations of the Winter courses but are certainly appropriate for newcomers as well. Because of the small class size and two teachers, we can individualize the instruction and bring new students up to date as needed. We will be shifting to a faster pace to cover all of the necessary material in preparation for the fall test. Our study will be based upon the Barron's book, along with a lot of supporting materials, provided by the workshop.

Fall program

SHSAT Prep
September 12th - October 25th
Time: Monday 5.30-7.30pm
            Tuesday 5.30-7.30pm
            or

The fall classes will serve as review and repetition of the concepts covered in our Spring & Summer courses. The key to success on the exam is as much practice and exposure as possible. Some students will need the full 2-hour weekly class + the Saturday sessions, while some may just benefit from the Saturday sessions. We will use the McGraw Hill review book as well as supplemental materials.

10 student maximum. Pricing includes textbook, binder, and 3 free practice tests with detailed score reports.
