Specialized High School Admissions Test Preparation

As you know, the SHSAT changed significantly in 2017.  We are excited to be able to work with your kids during the transitonal period as the city tries to make the test more equitable and fair for all. The test is still designed to be challenging and can be very intimidating to students. With a lot of practice, skill-building, and understanding strategies to find the simplicity hidden in the complicated way the questions are worded, we can help students master this test and maximize their scores.

Each student has different needs with regard to test prep. The most important aspect is getting an early start on preparation for this exam if you truly think that the specialized high schools are the best fit for your child.

At Smith Street Workshop, we offer:

  • Courses (see below for registration)

    • Our courses run in the winter, spring, summer & fall with a maximum of 15 kids. They cover all aspects of the test in an intimate setting where students naturally challenge each other to take it to the next level. We look at every necessary skill set & strategy and then practice, practice, practice.

    • If the timing of the courses does not work for your child's schedule, contact us to create your own customized class with 5+ friends. We are available all summer.

  • Group Sessions (click through for pricing, contact info)

    • 2-3 students with similar needs come together for private sessions with a skilled instructor

  • Individual Sessions (click through for pricing, contact info)

    • one-on-one sessions to hone specific skills unique to the student

SHSAT Course registration comes with 2 full-length free practice tests. Students should plan to take one test at the beginning of the course and one towards the end in order to track progress and make plans for moving forward. The tests take place every other Saturday morning or afternoon at our 339 Smith location and last for 3 hours. You will receive a code via email at the time of course registration to waive the test fee. The dates can be found here.

Description: The fall SHSAT course is the final push to make sure all students are ready for the test. We will review all of the material, and practice, practice, practice. We accommodate all levels, and teachers work hard to differentiate and individualize instruction. In this session, we continue beyond the introduction to the material and really zero in on the most important content, and hone the students' individual strategies for mastering each type of question. Repetition, lots of practice and confidence building continue to be essential to feeling positive as the test approaches.
